Alex S. Vitale is a sociologist and coordinator of the Policing and Social Justice Project at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center. He works as a consultant for both police departments and human rights organizations around the world. He has spent over 30 years exploring the history of the deep-seated institutional racist practices that permeate police departments. Vitale argues that the single largest threat to American democracy today is policing. He advocates for the end of policing as we know it. In its place, he calls for appropriate agencies to take its place. This includes appropriate social and economic funding and a holistic approach to issues facing minorities in the US including education, health services, and community support programs.
